Karolina Burda's interview with Marek Trojanowicz
Let's suppose that we want to spend a vacation in Greece and we want to organize everything ourselves, without any travel agency. All we have to do is buy airline tickets, book a hotel (close to the beach, and to the center of a town, where nightlife is extensive and varied) and rent a car. Soon we will painfully come to realize that by saying “all we have to do” we were overoptimistic. Our first query: “hotel in Crete” results in Google showing hundreds of answers. And maybe none of them is what we are looking for. And this is just the beginning of our search... Information chaos is to blame – the scourge of the Internet.
- Instead of answers to simple questions, the Internet user gets endless lists of links to various websites – explains Marek Trojanowicz, Chief Technology Officer of InteliWISE. The company develops innovative software based on artificial intelligence algorithms.
This is why World Wide Web (WWW) which not so long ago was considered a triumphal success, now is often said to be merely a database of opinion and advice. Internet search engines browse through millions of pages and rate their relevance to words or phrases. But the issue is that they see those queries as endless and loose character strings. Without the ability to read the content they look for keywords and sort them e.g. by popularity. They sometimes succeed and sometimes they don't.
Tim Berners-Lee, creator of the World Wide Web, back in 2001, announced in “Scientific American” that intelligent applications will be made which will automatically interpret words and commands. It will be possible when loose information will be replaced by a connected databases, understandable for the programs.
- Provided that websites are described in a form of semantic web – and instead of a few loose keywords it is possible to input an intelligent and complex sentence which an Internet browser can interpret – finding a dream vacation in Greece will take us only a moment. - says Trojanowicz.
Theoretically the web is to be based on applications, in which a traditional browsing window will be replaced by an agent or avatar. The virtual character, using natural language to communicate with the user, is one of the elements which will make the semantic web friendly, fast and simple to use for an average user.
