Puls Biznesu, a Polish daily newspaper devoted to economics,
(ed. nb 2465) 29th October 2007, has printed a fascinating article by
Wojciech Chmielarz entitled “Artificial intelligence is doing outstandingly in many branches. Fortunately it cannot exist without people - yet.”
The author deliberates on how AI, which is now an integral part of the business community, can help the average businessperson. In the article, a short history of the beginnings of AI with Alan Turing is presented, and some forecasts are made for the future.
The technologies which make it possible to communicate with a computer in natural language are used today in internet browsers and dialogue systems. However, it won’t be too long before the internet will be abundant with virtual call centre workers, who are fluent in every language in the world, who work for free, who need no holidays and who receive no social benefits. Even, for example, computer programs in the position of vice president of huge corporations, responsible for deciding investment strategy for the next ten years, or financial advisors.
AI is also neural nets, based on the human nervous system, genetic algorithms and expert systems.
From the many advantages of AI business solutions, two are especially worthy of mention: 1. The ability of some system classes to learn, and the clarity of the knowledge notation, as well as the ability to explain proposed solutions, in the case of expert systems. 2. Their constant level of expertise, as their level does not depend on external factors.
However, AI systems will not oust people from business in the near future. For now they are on duty as helpers, they are not fully autonomous. The reasons for this are technological and financial barriers.
One of the six most famous examples of AI is a Virtual Stewardess. „On our national carrier's site, it helps customers to find the best connections, buy a ticket and find lost luggage. Our company is satisfied with its service.”.
